The question
How should causes, enabling conditions, triggers and constraints be distinguished when explaining why human behaviour or change occurs?
Definition
Cause, condition, trigger and constraint name different roles a causally relevant factor can play in an explanation: cause is the broadest term for causal contribution, a condition enables or supports the relevant causal process, a trigger relatively proximally precipitates the outcome, and a constraint restricts which outcomes remain available.
When an outcome follows a conspicuous event, that event can easily become the focal explanation. A question is asked and someone speaks. A message arrives and someone leaves. A rule changes and behaviour shifts soon afterward.
The timing may matter. But timing alone does not tell us whether the preceding event was causal, what role it played, or what else had to be true for the outcome to occur.
D2.3 establishes the prior distinction between correlation, prediction, causation and mechanism. D1.8 begins after causal relevance has been established. Its question is narrower: how did the relevant factor matter within the causal explanation?
The Library uses four terms to answer that question: cause, condition, trigger and constraint. They are not four mutually exclusive kinds of thing. Cause is the broadest term: it identifies causal contribution. Conditions, triggers and constraints describe more specific roles that a causally relevant factor may play.
Scientific disciplines do not always draw these boundaries in exactly the same way. The framework here is the Library's canonical vocabulary for distinguishing causal roles.
Not Everything Before an Outcome Is "The Cause"
Consider someone who speaks during a meeting after being asked a direct question.
If the question had not been asked, they might not have spoken at that moment. The question may therefore belong in the causal explanation.
It does not follow that the question explains everything.
Participation may also depend on whether the person can communicate, whether they are permitted to speak, what they know, what they intend to do, and how the meeting is structured. Time limits, role expectations or hierarchy may restrict the responses that are realistically available.
Not every fact in the background belongs in the explanation. The relevant conditions are those that materially bear on the causal question being asked. Being present in the room may be necessary for speaking in that room, but logical necessity alone does not make a fact explanatorily important.
This distinction matters because causal relevance and causal completeness are different.
A factor may genuinely contribute to an outcome while remaining only one part of the explanation.
Four Roles in Causal Explanation
Cause
Once causal relevance has been established, the Library uses cause broadly for a factor, event, process or condition that contributes to producing the specified outcome or changes its likelihood.
A cause does not have to act alone. It need not be sufficient by itself, and it need not be the factor nearest the outcome in time.
Identifying a cause also does not necessarily identify the mechanism through which its influence occurred.
Condition
A condition highlights the configuration within which focal causal contributors can operate.
An enabling condition may permit, support or materially affect whether a relevant causal process can occur. It may remain present for some time before the outcome appears.
In the meeting example, permission to participate could function as an enabling condition. Its presence does not explain why speaking occurred at a particular second, but its absence could materially change whether the response was feasible.
A condition can itself be causal. The term identifies its enabling or supporting role rather than placing it outside the causal explanation.
Trigger
A trigger is the Library's term for what many literatures might describe as a precipitating event or precipitating factor: a relatively proximal causal event or change that helps bring about the specified outcome under an existing causal configuration.
The direct question in the meeting can function as a trigger if it causally precipitates the response.
The value of the term lies in what it highlights: timing.
A trigger may explain why something occurred then without explaining why that event could have that effect under those conditions.
Calling something a trigger does not make it causally minor. A trigger can be decisive or even necessary within the causal route that actually occurred. Nor does every outcome have one. Some changes develop gradually or emerge through accumulation without any discrete precipitating event.
Constraint
A constraint restricts which relevant outcomes are available or feasible.
A locked door can eliminate one route out of a room without determining whether someone waits, searches for another exit or asks for help. The constraint changes what can happen without selecting one remaining action by itself.
Constraints can be absolute or graded. They may make an action impossible, harder, costlier or less feasible.
They can arise from bodily capacity, time, resources, information, physical access, social power or institutional rules. When changing the constraint changes which outcomes can occur, the constraint belongs in the causal explanation.
Calling something a constraint therefore describes how it matters: by restricting relevant possibilities.
A Trigger Is Not the Whole Causal Story
Proximal events are often easier to identify than the background configuration in which they operate.
Suppose the same direct question is asked in two different contexts. In one, the person answers immediately. In another, they do not.
If the question functions as a trigger in the first case, the trigger label still leaves several causal questions unanswered. The person may have had relevant knowledge in one situation but not the other. Speaking may have been permitted in one context and constrained in another. Their intentions, prior interaction and surrounding social conditions may also differ.
The same precipitating event can therefore have different consequences across people or contexts.
This is why a trigger may explain timing without explaining the wider causal configuration that made the outcome responsive to it.
The last visible event in a causal sequence can be genuinely important without being the most complete explanation of that sequence.
Necessary, Sufficient and Context-Dependent
The distinction between necessary and sufficient conditions helps clarify some causal structures.
A condition is necessary for a specified outcome or causal route when that outcome or route cannot occur without it.
A condition or configuration is sufficient when, under the specified causal circumstances, it is enough for the outcome to occur.
These relations are different.
Something can be necessary without being sufficient. Something can also be sufficient without being necessary if another causal route can produce the same outcome.
In complex systems, sufficiency often belongs more naturally to a configuration of conditions than to one isolated factor. Human behaviour is especially important here because many causal contributors are neither individually necessary nor individually sufficient. They may instead alter the probability of an outcome within a wider combination of influences.
A factor can also be necessary for one causal route without being necessary for the outcome overall. If another route can produce the same outcome, the first factor is necessary only relative to that pathway.
Necessary and sufficient must therefore always be interpreted relative to a specified outcome, causal route and background context.
Even then, necessity does not automatically confer explanatory importance. Many background facts may be necessary for an event without helping us understand why this particular outcome occurred rather than another.
The concepts are useful for clarifying causal configurations. They are not a complete theory of causation.
Causal Roles Can Overlap
The framework becomes most useful once the terms stop being treated as separate boxes.
A condition may also be a cause.
A trigger is causal in the Library's usage if it genuinely precipitates the outcome.
A constraint may be causal because altering it changes which responses remain feasible.
The same factor can also play different roles depending on the outcome being explained.
Consider an institutional rule. Relative to one behaviour, the rule may function as an enabling condition because it permits the action. Relative to another, it may act as a constraint by excluding an alternative. If a change in that rule causally precipitates a particular response, the change may also function as a trigger in that explanation.
For purposes of causal explanation, these labels therefore describe a factor's relation to a specified outcome and context rather than a permanent property of the factor itself.
The same outcome can also involve several roles at once. Behaviour may depend on enabling conditions, occur within meaningful constraints, follow a proximal trigger and involve several other causal contributors.
Those roles answer different questions.
They also tell us nothing by themselves about how important each contributor is. A background condition can be indispensable. A trigger may be replaceable. A constraint can radically narrow the available options. How much explanatory weight a factor deserves depends on the causal question and the evidence, not simply on its label.
A genuine cause can therefore be identified correctly while much of the explanation remains unresolved.
Better Causal Explanations Ask More Than One Question
The purpose of this vocabulary is not to divide every causal system into four perfectly separate compartments. It is to prevent premature closure.
Four questions provide a more disciplined starting point.
What contributed causally to the outcome? This identifies causal contributors broadly.
What enabled or supported the relevant causal process? This identifies conditions.
What precipitated the outcome at that time, if anything? This identifies possible triggers.
What restricted the relevant alternatives? This identifies constraints.
The answers can overlap, and some questions may have no distinct answer. Gradual change may involve no discrete trigger. The same factor may occupy several roles. A cause may alter probability without guaranteeing the outcome.
The framework also leaves space for factors that do not fit neatly into one of the narrower roles. Its purpose is explanatory precision, not taxonomic perfection.

Once a factor is known to matter causally, the next question is what role it played — and what the explanation still leaves out.
