The question
Why do patterns of human functioning remain stable over time, and what does that stability imply about the problem of lasting change?
Definition
Stability is sufficient continuity or recurrence in a specified pattern of functioning across a relevant timescale, despite variation within that pattern; it is actively produced when current processes, recurrent conditions or enduring structures contribute to that continuation, recurrence or restoration.
When human functioning changes, explanation tends to follow the novelty. We ask what caused the shift, what changed in the person's circumstances, what was learned, or why a different response became possible.
Continuity receives less attention. If someone behaves in recognisably similar ways across years, that regularity can easily be treated as background rather than as something requiring explanation.
D1.7 challenges that asymmetry.
Here, actively produced does not mean that every stable pattern requires continuous moment-to-moment regulation, nor does it imply conscious or deliberate maintenance. The claim is narrower and more defensible: persistence should not automatically be treated as causally empty. Ongoing processes, recurrent conditions and enduring structures can all contribute to continuity.
A pattern, in this context, is a recognisable regularity in functioning across relevant occasions rather than an identical response every time. Stability refers to continuity or recurrence in that pattern across an appropriate timescale.
Observing that such a pattern persists describes something important. It does not yet explain why it persists.
Stability Has Causes Too
Biological regulation offers a clear demonstration of the underlying principle. Body temperature, blood glucose and other regulated variables can remain within characteristic ranges despite changing demands because physiological systems respond continually to disturbance. Stability in these cases is compatible with substantial underlying activity.
That example should not be turned into a general theory of psychological persistence. Behavioural patterns are not simply forms of homeostasis, and there is no basis for saying that the nervous system universally resists novelty in order to preserve familiar states. The value of the example is more limited: stable output does not imply inactive process.
Behavioural continuity can arise differently. Research on habit shows that repetition in recurring contexts can strengthen relations between features of a situation and familiar responses, allowing those contextual features to contribute to later recurrence (Wood & Rünger, 2016). Other patterns may depend more on incentives, deliberate choices, relationships, social roles or environmental constraints.
This is why descriptions of stability should not be mistaken for explanations of stability. Saying that someone "has always been this way," or even describing a relatively stable trait, can summarise a recurring tendency without identifying all of the processes that keep that tendency stable.
The causal question remains open: what current processes, conditions or structures contribute to this continuity?
Beginning Is Not the Same as Continuing
Why a pattern began and why it continues are distinct causal questions, even when some of the same processes contribute to both.
This distinction concerns explanatory roles rather than necessarily different mechanisms. A contextual cue can help establish a behaviour and later continue to evoke it. A relational pattern can participate in the development of an expectation and later remain part of the setting in which that expectation is repeatedly expressed. In other cases, the conditions that originally produced a pattern disappear while other influences continue to support it.
Historical explanation can therefore be correct without being sufficient.
A past event may have been crucial to the origin of a response. That does not establish that the same event, or even the same mechanism, explains why the response remains likely now. Current context, learned relations, recurring consequences or social conditions may have become maintenance-relevant in their own right.
Behaviour-change research makes this distinction especially visible. Theories of maintenance address problems that are not exhausted by theories of initiation, and learning research shows that later expression of learned responses can depend on conditions different from those involved in initial acquisition (Kwasnicka et al., 2016).
A durable structure can also occupy both roles at once. It may be historically produced and presently maintenance-relevant simply because it remains part of the current causal context.
The important shift is therefore from asking only how a pattern was established to asking what currently helps it persist.
How Patterns Reproduce Themselves
There is no single mechanism of human stability. Different patterns can be supported by different combinations of regulation, learning, expectation, consequence and structure.
Some continuity is maintained through regulation. In physiology, ongoing adjustment keeps important variables within viable ranges. This provides direct evidence that stability can be dynamically produced without implying that the same regulatory architecture explains every psychological pattern.
Learning provides another route. Familiar contexts can make previously learned responses easier to retrieve or more likely to occur. Behaviour can therefore remain recurrent even when momentary intentions fluctuate. Habit is one important example, but it is not a synonym for stability as a whole.
Cognitive processes can also participate. Expectations and interpretations influence what people anticipate, notice and sometimes how they respond. Research on interpersonal expectancies and behavioural confirmation shows that, under some conditions, such expectations can affect interactions in ways that favour familiar outcomes. That makes cognition one possible contributor to maintenance in particular domains, not a universal explanation for why people remain the same.
Some patterns also alter the conditions for what happens next. A response can change another person's behaviour, modify available options or affect the consequences of future responses. Social cognitive theory provides one influential framework for representing reciprocal influence among personal factors, behaviour and environment, while empirical research in learning and interpersonal processes demonstrates more specific forms of such reciprocity.
These cases introduce the possibility of self-reinforcing patterns: consequences of a pattern can sometimes become part of the conditions favouring its recurrence. The detailed structure of feedback loops belongs elsewhere in the Library. For D1.7, the relevant point is only that present consequences can become maintenance-relevant.
None of these possibilities can be inferred merely from the fact that a pattern is stable. Which contributors actually matter is an empirical question for the specific pattern under examination.
Stability Extends Beyond the Individual
A stable pattern observed in a person need not be maintained entirely by stable causes inside that person.
Human functioning occurs within relationships, physical environments, social roles and institutions. Those conditions can participate in continuity just as internal processes can.
Interpersonal behaviour is one example. What one person does alters the situation to which another responds, and that response becomes part of what happens next. Research on interpersonal complementarity documents systematic reciprocal tendencies in social behaviour, although reciprocity does not imply equal causal contribution or rigid symmetry between participants.
This matters because recurring interaction patterns can emerge from the relationship between people rather than being attributable entirely to either individual. A person's relatively stable tendencies still matter, but they need not provide a complete causal account of what repeatedly happens between them and others.
Environments contribute in another way. Places, schedules, objects, opportunities, constraints and predictable consequences can repeatedly make some responses more likely than others. Habit and behaviour-maintenance research both support the role of contextual stability in behavioural recurrence. The environment does not determine behaviour, but recurring surroundings can remain part of the causal architecture through which familiar behaviour continues.
Institutional conditions can extend that continuity further. Roles, routines, rules and social norms may remain in place across interactions and even across changes in personnel. Research on organisational routines and norm dynamics shows how regularities can persist through social transmission, role expectations, network processes and formal structures rather than residing in any single individual.
Behavioural regularity can therefore reflect both relatively stable characteristics of the person and recurring demands, affordances or constraints of the settings they occupy.
The maintenance of a pattern can be distributed across the person and the conditions in which that pattern repeatedly occurs.
Which parts of that distributed system matter most cannot be inferred from persistence alone.
Stable Does Not Mean Static
Stability does not require exact repetition.
A person's behaviour may vary substantially from one day to another while remaining recognisable across months. An interpersonal pattern can differ in intensity across encounters while repeatedly taking a similar form. A regulated physiological variable can fluctuate within a range without losing its broader stability.
D1.6 established that stability and variability can coexist at different timescales. D1.7 adds a causal implication: variation within a pattern does not necessarily mean that the processes or conditions supporting the larger continuity have disappeared.
Dynamic stability refers here to continuity in a larger pattern that coexists with ongoing activity, fluctuation or adjustment within it.
Sometimes a pattern changes little when disturbed. Sometimes it departs temporarily and later returns toward a familiar range. Sometimes recognisably similar responses recur when familiar conditions reappear. These are different ways stability can become visible, not a formal taxonomy of stable systems.
What persists may be a characteristic range, a recurring response pattern or a statistical regularity rather than an identical output on every occasion.
The distinction matters because an unusual episode can be real change at one timescale while the broader pattern remains relatively stable at another.
Stable Does Not Mean Fixed
Evidence that a pattern has persisted is not evidence that it cannot change.
This follows from the maintenance perspective itself. If continuity depends partly on current processes, contexts or structures, then changes in those conditions can alter what happens next. Habitual responses can become more flexible when relevant contexts change. Social norms can weaken, disappear or be replaced. Regulatory systems can shift as the conditions under which regulation occurs change.
These examples do not imply that any stable pattern will change simply because one surrounding condition changes. Nor do they imply that persistence is mostly external.
They establish a narrower point: stability does not entail immutability.
A pattern can be highly persistent under one range of conditions and less stable under another. The conditions supporting continuity are themselves part of the changing world.
Stability is also descriptive before it is evaluative. A persistent pattern may be useful, harmful or mixed. Its duration tells us that continuity has occurred; it does not tell us whether that continuity is desirable.
Lasting Change Is Also a Stability Problem
Once stability itself becomes a legitimate target of explanation, the problem of lasting change looks different.
A new response can appear while many of the conditions associated with the previous pattern remain present. Earlier learning may still influence behaviour. Familiar contexts may continue to cue old responses. Relationships, routines and institutional structures may remain largely unchanged.
That does not mean the new response is unreal. It means that novelty and stability answer different questions.
A new response appearing and a new pattern becoming stable are different achievements.
Behaviour-change research supports the broader distinction between initiation and maintenance, but D1.7 does not yet answer what makes changed functioning sufficiently durable to count as lasting. That question belongs later in the Library.
The contribution here is more fundamental. A complete account of human change cannot explain only where difference comes from. It must also remain capable of explaining continuity.
When a pattern changes, we can ask what produced the shift. When a pattern persists, we can ask what current processes, recurrent conditions or enduring structures contribute to its continuation.
Neither question should be treated as secondary to the other.
Observing stability tells us that a pattern has persisted. Explaining stability requires us to ask why.
And once that distinction is clear, lasting change becomes not only a problem of producing something new, but a problem of understanding how patterns acquire and maintain stability across time.
