The question
Does the person judge themselves capable of organising and performing what this situation requires, and how does that judgment differ from competence, confidence, agency and expected outcomes?
Self-efficacy is not simply confidence or positive thinking. It is a judgment about whether you can organise and perform the actions a particular situation requires—and that judgment may differ from your actual capability.
"Can I do it?" is only one question
Imagine preparing for a job interview. Three different questions matter:
- Can I communicate my experience effectively?
- Will a strong interview improve my prospects?
- Will circumstances permit me to get the job?
You may believe that you can perform well while remaining uncertain about the result. The employer's decision depends on more than your performance.
Self-efficacy principally concerns the first question: whether you judge yourself capable of organising and performing the required action.
It does not mean believing that success is guaranteed.
What self-efficacy means
Self-efficacy is a person's judgment of their capability to organise and perform the actions required in a particular domain or situation.
Each part of that definition matters.
A judgment is a subjective assessment, not a direct measurement of ability.
Capability concerns whether the person believes they can perform what is required.
To organise and perform an action can involve coordinating attention, knowledge, skill and behaviour.
The required actions depend on the task's demands. Believing that you can walk for ten minutes does not establish that you feel capable of completing a marathon.
A domain or situation sets the judgment's boundaries. Someone can feel capable in familiar professional work and doubtful when attempting an unfamiliar social or physical task.
Albert Bandura's foundational formulation distinguished efficacy expectations from expected outcomes and proposed that capability judgments could affect engagement with action. The definition comes first, however: self-efficacy is a perceived capability, not a promise that belief will create performance.
People can possess relevant capability while doubting that they can use it. They can also feel capable while overestimating their skill or what the situation permits.
Self-efficacy is specific
Self-efficacy is most precise when the judgment corresponds to defined actions, difficulty levels and conditions.
A person may feel capable of driving in familiar traffic but not on ice. They may feel able to explain work they know well but doubt their ability to answer unfamiliar technical questions. They may feel capable of completing one exercise while remaining uncertain about a more demanding variation.
Research therefore often measures efficacy relative to:
- a task;
- a domain;
- a level of difficulty;
- particular conditions;
- a stage of learning.
Some scales measure general self-efficacy: a broad belief about managing challenges across situations. Such measures can be useful, but they answer a broader question than whether someone can perform one specified action. Research distinguishing task-, domain- and general efficacy supports treating the measurement level as an important part of the construct. Woodruff and Cashman (1993)
The efficacy judgment and the outcome used to evaluate it should refer to corresponding actions, demands and conditions. A general coping score cannot automatically explain performance on one precise task.
Local efficacy judgments can become connected to broader identity organisation, as explained in Identity as an Organising Model. They can also vary across the personal, social and role-based domains distinguished in Personal, Social and Role Identity. A capability judgment may become identity-relevant without becoming identical to identity.
Self-efficacy is not sense of agency
As explained in Sense of Agency, a person can experience themselves as causing or controlling an action. Self-efficacy instead concerns whether they judge themselves capable of meeting the action's demands.
A driver may clearly experience themselves as controlling a vehicle while doubting their ability to drive safely on ice. Agency is present; efficacy for the more demanding situation is low.
The constructs answer different questions:
- Am I causing or controlling this action?
- Can I perform this action at the required level?
They are adjacent but non-identical. Neither question can replace the other.
Perceived capability is not actual capability
Perceived and demonstrated capability can correspond, but they do not have to.
A person can have:
- high perceived and high demonstrated capability;
- low perceived and low demonstrated capability;
- high perceived but low demonstrated capability;
- low perceived but high demonstrated capability.
The strength of an efficacy judgment and its accuracy are therefore separate.
Strong efficacy can be well calibrated or overestimated. Overestimation can contribute to underpreparation, underestimated risk or persistence with an ineffective strategy.
Weak efficacy can underestimate genuine capacity. It can also accurately represent insufficient preparation, difficult conditions or current limits.
High and low efficacy are not inherently good or bad. Their interpretation depends partly on how well the judgment corresponds to capability, demands and context.
Capability itself can change across situations. Fatigue, health, time pressure, equipment and task difficulty can alter what a person can perform. A judgment that was accurate in one setting may be inaccurate in another.
Capability expectancy is not outcome expectancy
Self-efficacy concerns whether a person believes they can perform an action. Outcome expectancy concerns whether performing it will produce a particular result.
A candidate can believe they can give an excellent interview while remaining unsure that the employer will select them. Capability expectancy is high; outcome expectancy is uncertain.
The reverse pattern is also possible. Someone may believe that completing a demanding training programme would improve their performance while doubting their present ability to complete it. The expected value of the action is high; perceived capability is low.
"I can perform the action" is not the same as:
- "the action will work";
- "I will choose to do it";
- "the result is under my control";
- "nothing will prevent success."
This capability–outcome distinction was central to the original theory. Bandura (1977)
Confidence, self-esteem, optimism and motivation
Several neighbouring ideas are commonly called self-belief, but they refer to different judgments.
Confidence is broad everyday language. It can describe certainty, composure, optimism or social ease. Task-specific confidence may approximate self-efficacy, but confidence without a defined capability is less precise.
Self-esteem concerns personal worth. Someone can value themselves while doubting their ability to perform a particular task.
Optimism concerns favourable expectations. A person may expect a good result because circumstances are improving or others will help—not because they believe they can produce it alone.
Motivation concerns willingness, value and energisation. Someone may feel capable but see no reason to act, or care deeply while feeling incapable.
Intention concerns readiness or commitment to act. Believing "I can" differs from deciding "I will."
These constructs can interact without becoming interchangeable.
Self-efficacy and perceived control
Self-efficacy also overlaps with perceived control.
Research often distinguishes:
- whether a person feels capable of performing an action;
- whether performing it is experienced as controllable or up to them.
The distinction is not a perfect separation between internal and external factors. Capability judgments can incorporate difficult conditions, while perceived control can include beliefs about whether personal action is sufficient.
Ajzen's analysis treats efficacy and controllability as distinguishable but related components of perceived behavioural control. Ajzen (2002) Empirical research likewise indicates that efficacy, difficulty and control can make different contributions to intentions and behaviour. Rodgers, Conner and Murray (2008)
Self-efficacy and perceived control can overlap. A measure should not treat them as interchangeable without examining what its questions actually assess.
Capability operates inside conditions
Feeling capable does not guarantee that the environment permits an action or that the action will produce the intended result.
Action and performance may also depend on:
- actual skill;
- health and energy;
- time and resources;
- access and safety;
- permission and support;
- task difficulty;
- institutional conditions.
This connects self-efficacy to the broader action-control context established in D8.2. Capability judgments operate within those conditions rather than replacing them.
A capable applicant cannot create a vacancy that does not exist. A skilled employee may lack authority to make a decision. Someone may feel capable of performing a task but lack the necessary equipment or safe conditions.
Failure therefore does not prove insufficient self-belief. It may reflect capability, strategy, opportunity, uncertainty or obstruction. Converting every unsuccessful outcome into a confidence problem replaces explanation with blame.
Efficacy judgments are updated by evidence
Self-efficacy judgments can change as people encounter new evidence.
Previous performance, feedback, observation, changing demands and information about support or constraints can all alter what a person believes they can perform.
Performance is particularly important. Successful action may show that a task is manageable. Difficulty can reveal missing skill, ineffective strategy or underestimated demands.
This makes one-way causal stories unreliable. Efficacy may relate to later action, but earlier performance can also produce later efficacy.
A major within-person meta-analysis found that past performance predicted subsequent efficacy more consistently than efficacy predicted later performance. After time-related performance trends were controlled, the analysed efficacy-to-performance relationship became weak and nonsignificant. The size and direction of the relationship also varied across tasks and methods. Sitzmann and Yeo (2013)
This does not establish that self-efficacy never affects action. It shows that prior performance is a major source of capability judgments and a potential explanation for observed associations.

Measurement changes what the construct appears to be
A self-efficacy questionnaire measures a reported capability judgment. It does not directly measure competence, opportunity or future performance.
Its meaning depends on what it asks.
"I can solve these equations under timed conditions" is more specific than "I can handle difficult situations." The second statement may combine coping, optimism, control and identity.
Interpretation becomes difficult when:
- a general measure is paired with a highly specific task;
- questions ask about achieving outcomes rather than performing actions;
- intention or control items are labelled as efficacy;
- efficacy is measured only after extensive performance feedback;
- behaviour is used as proof of the belief proposed to explain it.
The final error creates circular reasoning: persistence cannot independently establish high efficacy if high efficacy is then used to explain the persistence.
A self-efficacy score is interpretable only in relation to what the scale asks, when it asks it and which performance criterion it is compared with.
Cultural and developmental qualification
Measures do not necessarily function identically across languages, age groups and cultural settings.
Translation can alter wording. Development can change how people understand difficulty and capability. Cultural context can influence self-presentation and what support is assumed when someone judges whether they "can" act.
A two-country study of a general self-efficacy scale found only partial equivalence for direct score comparison. Teo and Kam (2014) A broader analysis across PISA countries and economies likewise found limited full-scale equivalence and cautioned against treating self-efficacy as a simple cross-cultural indicator of resilience. Kaya, Eryilmaz and Yuksel (2024)
These findings do not prove fixed national differences. They show that raw scores may not carry identical meaning and that measurement equivalence must be tested.
What self-efficacy allows us to distinguish
Self-efficacy identifies one specific part of an action problem:
Does the person judge themselves capable of organising and performing what this situation requires?
That judgment may be strong or weak, accurate or inaccurate. It can differ across domains, change through experience and coexist with decisive external constraints.
