Expected Capability Changes Action

People do not act only from what they can objectively do. What they expect themselves to be capable of can change which actions they attempt, how much effort they invest and whether they continue after difficulty.

The question

Given what a person expects themselves to be capable of here, how may that expectation change which actions are considered, selected, begun, sustained or abandoned — without determining skill, opportunity or outcome?

People do not act only from what they can objectively do. What they expect themselves to be capable of can change which actions they attempt, how they allocate effort and whether they remain engaged after difficulty.

Comparable capability can lead to different action

Two employees have comparable experience and have both performed well on related tasks. When a more demanding responsibility becomes available, one volunteers while the other does not pursue it.

Their demonstrated capability may be similar, but the action does not appear equally feasible to both.

The first employee may accurately recognise that existing skills can transfer. They may also be overestimating the new task. The second may have noticed relevant limits or may be underestimating a capability they already possess.

Nor does apparent access to the same opportunity establish identical information, support, permission, risk or consequences.

Volunteering does not prove greater capability. Declining does not prove inability. The example reveals a narrower point:

What someone can do and what they expect themselves to be capable of can differ. Both can affect action.

Expected capability begins with self-efficacy

As established in D9.11 — Self-Efficacy, self-efficacy is a person's judgment of their capability to organise and perform the actions required in a particular domain or situation.

D9.11 defines the judgment. D9.12 explains its possible effects on action.

Expected capability is not the same as objective skill, expected success, motivation, intention or opportunity. Someone may possess the skill while doubting it. They may feel capable but see no reason to act. They may believe an action would be worthwhile while doubting their ability to perform it.

The foundational theory proposed that efficacy expectations can influence whether behaviour begins, how effort is allocated and whether engagement continues. Bandura (1977)

The word influence is essential. Expected capability is one input into action—not a mechanism that determines behaviour by itself.

Association does not reveal causal direction

People reporting stronger self-efficacy often perform better.

A meta-analysis of work-related performance found a positive average relationship between self-efficacy and performance across 114 studies involving more than 21,000 participants. The relationship also varied substantially across tasks and settings. Stajkovic and Luthans (1998)

Several processes can produce such an association:

  • efficacy may influence action;
  • earlier performance may increase efficacy;
  • objective capability may increase both;
  • supportive conditions may increase both;
  • task difficulty, goals or motivation may affect both.

Comparing different people also answers a different question from following change within the same person.

A highly skilled person may have stronger efficacy and better performance than others. But after one successful attempt, that person may decide that less preparation is needed next time. The between-person relationship can be positive while the within-person effect is neutral or negative.

Expected capability can influence action, but a positive efficacy–performance correlation does not reveal which causal direction produced it.

Expected capability changes the perceived feasible set

People do not treat every logically possible action as a live option.

Some actions enter active consideration. Others remain outside it because they appear too difficult, premature or inaccessible. This exclusion need not be conscious; an option can fail to become psychologically available without a deliberate decision to reject it.

An action might appear possible now, possible with support, possible after preparation or beyond present capability.

Research on task choice suggests that efficacy can contribute to the complexity people select, although prior performance, goals and other differences also matter. Tabernero and Wood (2009)

The perceived feasible set can be inaccurate. Underconfidence can exclude an achievable action. Overconfidence can include an action beyond present capability. External barriers can make a subjectively feasible action unavailable.

This connects expected capability to the inherited action model in D7.14. Efficacy contributes to how options are represented; it is not the whole selection process.

Opportunity, selection and initiation are different

Several action stages are often collapsed:

  • an option exists;
  • it is represented as available;
  • it enters consideration;
  • it is preferred or selected;
  • an intention forms;
  • execution begins;
  • the action is completed.

Expected capability can matter at several stages without controlling any of them completely.

An action judged performable may be more likely to move from consideration toward initiation, although efficacy is rarely the only factor governing that transition. Competing priorities, limited current capacity, practical friction, changed information or external obstruction may still prevent execution.

Feeling capable cannot supply absent time, energy, access, safety or permission.

This broader action-control context is established in D8.2. Psychological selection operates inside real opportunity structures. A person can feel capable while lacking opportunity, or possess an opportunity while doubting their ability to use it.

Structural exclusion should never be redescribed as insufficient self-belief.

Expected capability changes where effort goes

Effort capacity and effort allocation are different.

Effort capacity concerns how much usable energy, attention or time is available. Effort allocation concerns where those resources are directed.

An action judged impossible may receive little effort even when some capacity exists. An action judged feasible and valuable may receive a larger share of preparation or attention.

Higher efficacy does not always produce more effort. It may indicate that investment is worthwhile, but it can also signal that the task is manageable with fewer resources.

Studies have found that higher efficacy can sometimes predict reduced resource allocation, particularly when time is scarce. That reduction can be adaptive when resources are limited and the allocation judgment is sufficiently accurate. Beck and Schmidt (2018)

Expected capability can therefore change where effort goes without creating additional effort capacity. Belief does not generate unlimited energy, attention, time or physical capacity.

Difficulty has to be interpreted

When action meets resistance, the difficulty does not explain itself.

It may signal ordinary challenge, insufficient preparation, need for support, an ineffective strategy, task–capability mismatch or changed external conditions.

Expected capability can influence which interpretation becomes plausible. Strong efficacy may make ordinary difficulty easier to tolerate, but it may also delay recognition that adjustment is needed. Weak efficacy may make a manageable setback appear diagnostic of inability—or accurately represent that the task currently exceeds capacity.

Success and failure do not update efficacy mechanically. A successful outcome may be attributed to capability, effort, assistance, favourable conditions or luck. Failure may be attributed to skill, strategy, effort, unusual difficulty or obstruction.

Research supports reciprocal links between efficacy, feedback and causal attribution. Existing expectations can affect how feedback is interpreted, while those interpretations contribute to later efficacy judgments. Stajkovic and Sommer (2000)

Feedback changes capability expectations through interpretation, not simple reinforcement.

Persistence competes with adjustment and disengagement

Expected capability can affect whether someone remains engaged after difficulty. Continued engagement is not inherently beneficial.

Persistence may be appropriate when the task remains feasible, the goal remains valuable, feedback supports further investment and a better strategy is available.

Adjustment or disengagement may be preferable when the same strategy repeatedly fails, risk becomes unacceptable, conditions change or resources have a better use elsewhere.

In an experiment where task difficulty increased and decreased, participants with lower efficacy disengaged earlier and required a larger reduction in difficulty before re-engaging. Those with higher efficacy remained engaged longer but also disengaged when difficulty became sufficiently high. Beattie and Davies (2010)

The experiment supports a relationship between efficacy and engagement thresholds in that task. It does not establish that later disengagement is always superior.

Persistence is evidence of continued engagement—not proof that the capability expectation is accurate or that continuation is wise.

Avoidance does not diagnose low efficacy

Low expected capability can contribute to avoidance. An action represented as unmanageable may not enter action at all.

Experimental fear research provides evidence for such an effect. Bandura, Reese and Adams altered participants' perceived coping efficacy and found that higher efficacy was accompanied by greater coping behaviour and lower distress in specialised phobic contexts. Bandura, Reese and Adams (1982)

The efficacy manipulation involved mastery or modelling procedures. Those procedures can also change information, familiarity and threat appraisal, so they do not isolate belief from every other psychological change.

Avoidance can also reflect low value, high risk, limited capacity, conflicting goals, practical barriers, uncertainty or strategic refusal.

Three people may decline the same action for different reasons:

  • "I do not think I can perform it."
  • "I can perform it, but I do not choose to."
  • "I can perform it and would choose it, but conditions prevent it."

Observed non-action does not reveal which explanation applies.

This also distinguishes expected capability from D9.2 — Sense of Agency. Experiencing oneself as the author of an action is not the same as expecting oneself to meet a particular demand.

High efficacy can be useful, neutral or costly

The usefulness of an efficacy judgment depends partly on calibration.

Well-calibrated efficacy may support selection of feasible challenges, engagement and tolerance of ordinary difficulty.

Underconfidence may exclude feasible options, inhibit movement toward initiation or make normal resistance appear diagnostic of inability.

Overconfidence may contribute to insufficient preparation, reduced monitoring, underestimated risk, overambitious selection or delayed strategy revision.

Within-person experiments have found that efficacy effects can change sign across conditions. Vancouver, Thompson and Williams reported circumstances in which higher efficacy predicted poorer subsequent performance, while another study found positive effects under difficult-goal conditions. Vancouver, Thompson and Williams (2001)

High efficacy is therefore not universally beneficial, and low efficacy is not universally harmful. Calibration depends on difficulty, consequences, reversibility, feedback quality and available resources.

Action changes later expectations

Action generates evidence about present capability, task difficulty, strategy effectiveness, available support and external constraints. That evidence can revise later efficacy, but the direction is not automatic.

A major within-person meta-analysis found that past performance predicted later efficacy more consistently than efficacy predicted later performance. After researchers controlled for time-related performance trends, the efficacy-to-performance relationship in the analysed studies became weak and nonsignificant. Results still varied across tasks and methods. Sitzmann and Yeo (2013)

Experimental evidence indicates that altered efficacy can change coping and engagement in some settings. The meta-analysis nevertheless establishes prior performance as a major source of later capability judgments and a potential explanation for positive efficacy–performance associations.

The defensible model is reciprocal:

Expected capability can influence action, while action and interpreted feedback can revise expected capability.

Neither direction is universally dominant.

Context changes what an efficacy judgment means

Capability expectations and their behavioural effects do not necessarily function identically across domains, developmental stages or cultural contexts.

A task can carry different meanings, levels of assumed support and social consequences. People may also differ in how directly they express confidence. Translated or general efficacy measures do not always support direct score comparisons across groups.

These differences do not establish fixed psychological types. They require researchers to test whether measures, action demands and opportunities have comparable meanings before generalising an efficacy–action relationship.

Capability expectations can become identity-relevant

A local efficacy judgment can extend into a broader conclusion:

"I struggled with this task" becomes "I am not someone who can do this."

As explained in D9.4 — Identity as an Organising Model, identity can organise which experiences appear representative. A local capability judgment may therefore become identity-relevant without becoming identical to identity or being determined by it.

Expected capability changes the action path

Expected capability can influence what enters consideration, what is selected, whether execution begins, where available effort is directed and how difficulty is interpreted. It can affect whether engagement continues, changes or ends.

It does not independently determine skill, effort capacity, opportunity, performance or outcome.

Expected capability can change the path into and through action. Action then supplies evidence that may confirm, correct or complicate the expectation.
