What Is Emotion Regulation?

Emotion regulation is broader than suppressing feelings. It includes processes that alter how emotions develop, are experienced, are expressed and influence action.

The question

What is being changed when an emotion is regulated—and what is not?

Definition

Emotion regulation is the broad family of processes through which emotional responses are shaped over time. It can affect which situations people enter, what they notice, how they interpret events, what they feel, what they express and how they act. It can decrease emotion, but it can also maintain or intensify it. It may be deliberate or relatively automatic, private or interpersonal, helpful or costly. Regulating emotion therefore does not simply mean suppressing feelings, remaining calm or making unpleasant emotions disappear.

Imagine someone becoming angry during a difficult conversation. They pause, lower their voice and choose their next words carefully. From the outside, this may look like successful emotion regulation. Yet the visible behaviour does not tell us exactly what changed.

Their anger may have decreased. It may still be intense but no longer expressed openly. They may have reconsidered the other person's intentions, redirected their attention or decided that preserving the relationship matters more than winning the argument. They may even have increased their anger deliberately because they believe it will help them defend an important boundary.

All of these possibilities involve emotion regulation, but they are not psychologically identical.

Emotion regulation is the broad family of processes through which emotional responses are shaped over time. It can affect which situations people enter, what they notice, how they interpret events, what they feel, what they express and how they act. It can decrease emotion, but it can also maintain or intensify it. It may be deliberate or relatively automatic, private or interpersonal, helpful or costly.

Regulating emotion therefore does not simply mean suppressing feelings, remaining calm or making unpleasant emotions disappear.

Regulation changes an emotional trajectory

Emotions develop. An event is encountered or anticipated, attention is directed toward some features rather than others, the situation is interpreted in relation to current needs and goals, and changes may emerge across feeling, physiology, expression and action readiness.

Emotion regulation can intervene anywhere along this developing trajectory. It does not need to wait until an emotion is fully formed.

Suppose someone receives a short message from a colleague: "We need to talk tomorrow."

They might immediately interpret it as evidence that something has gone wrong. Anxiety rises, attention narrows and possible threats become easier to imagine. Regulation could then take several forms. The person might ask the colleague what the conversation concerns, remind themselves that the message is ambiguous, shift attention to another task or seek reassurance from someone they trust. They might also continue rehearsing threatening possibilities, which could maintain or intensify the anxiety.

Each response changes what happens next. Some alter the situation, some alter attention, some alter interpretation and others primarily alter the later expression or consequences of the emotion.

This is why emotion generation and emotion regulation cannot always be separated into two clean phases. The same processes that help construct an emotional response can also redirect it. Attention can amplify threat or reduce its prominence. Interpretation can intensify anger or soften it. Action can transform the situation that produced the emotion, creating a new cycle of evaluation and response.

Regulation can occur at different points

One influential framework distinguishes several points at which an emotional trajectory may be influenced.

A person can select situations by approaching or avoiding environments likely to evoke particular emotions. They can modify a situation by changing something within it. They can direct attention toward or away from emotionally significant information. They can alter how they interpret what is happening. Once an emotional response is underway, they can also influence its expression, physiology or behavioural consequences.

These are useful distinctions, but they should not be treated as a rigid sequence. Regulation often moves through feedback loops. Leaving a tense room changes the situation, attention and bodily arousal at once. Reinterpreting criticism may alter feeling and behaviour, which then changes how another person responds. What happens after an event—reflection, rumination, conversation or recovery—can also shape how the event is remembered and how similar situations are approached later.

Emotion regulation is therefore better understood as a dynamic process than as a single mental switch.

Different parts of emotion may change differently

An emotional episode can involve subjective feeling, physiological activation, appraisal, facial and vocal expression, action tendencies and observable behaviour. These components often interact, but they do not always move together.

Someone can conceal fear while continuing to feel afraid. Another person can report feeling calmer while their physiological activation declines more slowly. A third can remain angry but refrain from acting aggressively. Reduced expression is therefore not reliable evidence that the emotion itself has disappeared.

This distinction matters when regulation is evaluated. A strategy that changes outward behaviour may not change experience in the same way. A strategy that provides subjective relief may have different social or physiological consequences. No single measurement—whether self-report, facial behaviour, bodily activity or neural response—captures the entire regulatory process.

Expression is not experience, and change in one component does not establish equivalent change in every other component.

Emotion regulation does not always mean feeling less

People often regulate emotions because they want to feel better. They may reduce anxiety, soften sadness or calm anger. These are hedonic goals: goals concerned with changing how pleasant or unpleasant an experience feels.

But people also regulate emotion for instrumental reasons. They may want an emotional state because they believe it will help them perform, persist, communicate or act in accordance with a value. A person might maintain concern so that they prepare carefully, cultivate determination before a difficult task or allow grief to remain present because the loss matters.

People sometimes pursue competing goals. Reducing anxiety might provide immediate relief while making it harder to complete an important conversation. Expressing anger might protect a boundary while damaging a relationship. Concealing distress might help someone perform a public role while reducing the support others know to offer.

Successful regulation cannot therefore be defined solely as producing a pleasant emotional state. The relevant question is whether the process moved the person toward the goal being pursued—and what other consequences followed.

Pleasant emotion is not automatically evidence of success. Unpleasant emotion is not automatically evidence of failure.

Regulation may be deliberate or relatively automatic

Some regulation is intentional and easy to describe. A person notices rising frustration, decides not to reply immediately and takes a walk before returning to the conversation.

Other regulatory processes are less explicit. Learned attentional habits, familiar interpretations, social routines and well-practised responses may begin influencing emotion with little conscious deliberation. People can also have difficulty explaining why their emotional response changed.

This does not mean that every nonconscious change in emotion should be classified as emotion regulation. Emotions fluctuate for many reasons, including changes in the environment, fatigue, physiology and the natural passage of time. To describe a process as regulation, there must be a defensible connection to shaping an emotional response in relation to some goal or regulatory function.

The boundary becomes less obvious when the goal is not consciously represented. Scholarly definitions differ here, so deliberate and automatic regulation are best treated as graded and theoretically contested categories rather than perfectly separate systems.

Automatic does not mean biologically fixed, and deliberate does not guarantee effective control.

Trying to regulate is not the same as succeeding

Regulation requires more than knowing the name of a strategy.

A person must first identify whether regulation is needed. They must select a response appropriate to the situation, implement it effectively and monitor whether it is working. Difficulty can arise at any of these stages.

Someone may fail to recognise that anxiety is narrowing their interpretation. They may correctly identify the problem but choose a strategy poorly suited to the context. They may select a potentially useful strategy but be unable to apply it under high emotional intensity. They may continue using it even after its effects become counterproductive.

This preserves a crucial distinction: strategy use is not strategy effectiveness.

A person can attempt reappraisal without arriving at a credible alternative interpretation. They can suppress expression successfully while remaining highly distressed. They can seek social support but approach someone who intensifies the problem. Regulation is an attempt to shape emotion; successful regulation is an outcome that must be assessed against a goal and its consequences.

Immediate relief is not the same as long-term benefit

Time changes how regulatory outcomes should be evaluated.

Avoiding a feared situation may rapidly reduce anxiety. That relief is real, but repeated avoidance can also prevent learning, narrow future behaviour and strengthen expectations that the situation cannot be tolerated. How avoidance becomes self-reinforcing over that longer feedback cycle is examined separately in the Library.

The opposite pattern is also possible. Remaining in a difficult but manageable situation may temporarily increase discomfort while supporting learning, valued action or future confidence.

Neither short-term relief nor immediate discomfort tells us the whole story. Regulation can have different effects across minutes, days and repeated encounters. It can also distribute costs and benefits unevenly across experience, relationships, performance and health.

No strategy is inherently adaptive in every context

Strategies are often divided into "good" and "bad" categories. This is appealing, but too simple.

Expressive suppression can obscure needs, reduce social understanding or leave the underlying experience largely unchanged. It can also be useful when immediate expression would be unsafe, professionally inappropriate or harmful to someone else.

Reappraisal can reduce distress by changing an interpretation. Yet it can become invalidating if it is used to explain away genuine mistreatment or avoid necessary action. It is not merely positive thinking; an alternative interpretation must remain plausible.

Distraction can interrupt escalating emotion or create enough distance for more deliberate action. It can also become avoidance when it is used repeatedly to escape relevant information or responsibilities.

Acceptance can reduce the struggle against an existing emotional state. It does not mean approving of the situation, abandoning action or passively accepting harm.

A strategy's consequences depend on what the situation requires, what the person is trying to accomplish, when the strategy is used, how skilfully it is implemented and what follows afterward. How far emotion regulation depends on context is developed further in a later piece.

Regulation also happens between people

Emotion regulation is not confined to processes inside an isolated individual.

People seek comfort, reassurance, perspective and practical help. Parents shape children's emotional environments. Friends help each other reinterpret events. Groups can amplify fear, anger or enthusiasm through shared attention and expression. One person may deliberately try to calm, encourage or provoke another.

Interpersonal regulation does not remove individual agency. It shows that emotional trajectories are often socially organised. Whether another person's influence is supportive, ineffective or manipulative depends on the relationship, the goal and the consequences.

Cultural norms also shape which emotions are encouraged, restrained or displayed in particular settings. A restrained expression may be protective or socially skilled in one context and isolating in another. Findings about a strategy in one population or situation should not automatically be treated as universal.

Regulation develops

Regulatory capacities change through development. Children gradually acquire language, attentional control, perspective-taking, memory and knowledge about emotions. They also learn through caregivers and cultural environments which emotions can be expressed, how others respond and which strategies are available.

The ability to describe a strategy is not the same as the ability to use it effectively during an intense emotional episode. Developmental findings can also differ depending on whether researchers measure reported strategy use, observed behaviour, subjective feeling or neural activity.

Emotion regulation should therefore not be treated as one capacity that simply increases with age. Different components follow different developmental paths and remain sensitive to learning, relationships and context.

Flexibility matters more than a universal formula

Effective regulation is often described in terms of flexibility rather than reliance on one preferred strategy.

Flexibility includes noticing what a situation requires, having more than one possible response, selecting among them and updating the response when feedback indicates that it is not working. A wide repertoire alone is insufficient if strategies are chosen without regard to context. Context sensitivity alone is insufficient if the person cannot implement the strategy they select.

Flexibility also does not mean constant emotional optimisation. Sometimes the appropriate response is to allow an emotion to unfold. Feelings can provide information about needs, values, losses and possible threats, even though—as established in feelings inform but do not command—they do not uniquely determine what a person should do.

Regulation is not the opposite of emotion. It is one part of how emotional life is organised.

What evidence can establish

Emotion regulation is a theoretical construct inferred through converging evidence. Researchers may examine self-reported goals, strategy use, subjective experience, facial and vocal behaviour, choices, physiology, social interaction or neural activity.

These measurements answer different questions.

A self-report can provide evidence about what a person noticed or intended, but it does not reveal the complete underlying process. Behaviour can demonstrate what someone did without uniquely identifying why. Physiological change does not specify a single emotion or strategy. Neural findings can constrain theories, but they do not reveal a discrete emotion-regulation entity or prove that emotional reactivity and regulation occupy entirely separate systems.

Strong conclusions therefore depend on matching the evidence to the claim being made.

Emotion regulation shapes what happens next

Emotion regulation includes the processes through which emotional responses are influenced as they develop and produce consequences. It may alter situations, attention, interpretation, experience, expression or action. It may reduce an emotion, maintain it or increase it. It may operate deliberately, through learned routines or through interaction with other people.

None of this means that emotion is infinitely controllable. Regulatory capacity is constrained by development, context, available resources, emotional intensity, learning history and social conditions. Nor does regulation guarantee a beneficial result.

The central distinction is simpler: emotion regulation changes the trajectory or consequences of emotion; it does not simply remove feeling.

Understanding that distinction prevents calm appearance from being mistaken for inner calm, strategy use from being mistaken for success and emotional discomfort from being mistaken for failure. It also prepares the ground for examining particular emotion-regulation strategies, the contexts in which they function and the interpersonal systems through which emotions are shaped.
