Learning from Other People

Other people allow us to learn without discovering everything through direct trial and error. We observe actions, outcomes, instructions and expectations—but what we learn is selective, contextual and not always accurate.

The question

How do people learn from other people?

Imagine arriving at a gym and seeing an exercise you have never performed.

Before touching the equipment, you watch someone position their feet, control the weight and stop when their balance changes. A coach adds one short instruction about where to direct your attention.

You now know more than you did moments earlier. You may have learned what the movement is trying to achieve, where to begin and which mistake to avoid, even though you have not attempted it yourself.

But you might have misunderstood what you saw, lack the strength to perform it or pursue the same goal through another technique.

Other people can make learning faster, but they do not transfer behaviour into us. What they offer must still be noticed, interpreted, remembered and brought into action.

Other people make information from experience portable

Learning solely through direct experience would be slow and sometimes dangerous.

If everyone had to discover independently which plants were safe, how a machine worked or what followed a social violation, the costs could be enormous. Other people make information from experience portable, not the experience itself.

They can demonstrate, explain, warn or correct. A learner gains access to possibilities and consequences without encountering all of them personally.

This does not make direct experience unnecessary. Watching someone swim is not the same as being able to swim. An explanation may help you begin, but practice is often needed to calibrate movement, test understanding and adapt guidance to your circumstances. The two routes frequently interact: socially supplied information guides exploration, while direct experience confirms, changes or rejects what was learned.

Social learning is therefore part of the broader learning architecture introduced in What Is Learning?. As Human Cognition Is Social explains, other people are part of the environment from which people acquire knowledge, expectations and possible ways of acting.

Watching is not the same as copying

Observation is broader than imitation.

Suppose a child watches someone open a difficult container. The child might reproduce the same hand movement. That would be imitation. But they might instead use a different technique to achieve the same result, sometimes called emulation. They may learn only that the container can be opened, that one part moves or that force must be applied in a particular direction.

The visible outcome could look similar even though the learning process was different.

People can learn an action, goal, sequence, strategy, object property or rule. Observation can also teach what to avoid: watching an ineffective method may narrow the learner's search.

Behavioural similarity does not reveal exactly what was learned. Two people may reach the same result through different interpretations, while someone who understood the demonstration may later choose not to reproduce it. Controlled studies can show that a learning mechanism is possible, but not how strongly it operates in every ordinary setting.

Learning is not the same as doing

A person can learn something without performing it.

They may understand an exercise but lack the capability to execute it. They may know what a workplace rewards but reject the expectation, or remember a strategy without having the resources to use it.

Whether acquired knowledge becomes action can depend on memory, motivation, capability, opportunity, safety, incentives and competing goals.

The reverse problem also matters. If someone behaves like a model, that does not prove the behaviour was newly acquired through observation. It may already have been part of their repertoire, or they may have discovered it independently.

Learning and performance must therefore be considered separately. The absence of visible action does not prove that nothing was learned, and visible similarity does not identify how learning occurred.

Demonstrations guide attention

A demonstration can do more than display a completed action. It may direct attention toward information that matters for the task.

A demonstrator may slow down at a difficult step, point to an often-missed field or direct attention toward balance rather than speed.

These signals can make relevant features easier to notice, but learners may notice different things. Experience, fatigue, goals, distraction and cognitive load all influence what receives attention.

As explained in Attention Selects Information, only part of what is available becomes something the learner actively notices. Demonstrations can guide that selection, but the learner's knowledge and situation still shape what is taken from them.

We learn from actions and their consequences

People observe not only what others do but what happens afterward.

Someone sees a colleague praised for speaking up, a friend criticised for breaking an expectation or another person injured while taking a risk. Each outcome can inform an observer's expectations through different processes.

The learner may infer that an action is effective, dangerous, socially accepted or likely to carry a cost. This can happen without the observer receiving the same consequence directly.

But the observer may misunderstand why the outcome occurred. The same action might produce a different result in other circumstances, and a visible reward may hide later costs.

Observed consequences can therefore shape expectations without functioning as commands or as exact substitutes for direct reinforcement. They make possible outcomes more available, but they do not determine what the observer will learn or do.

Language carries information beyond what can be seen

Much of what people learn from one another cannot be demonstrated directly.

Someone can tell you that a road is closed, a form has a deadline or a machine has a hidden danger. Language carries reports about absent events, future possibilities and abstract rules.

Instructions can also organise preparation before direct experience. A person may learn or remember the stated first steps of an emergency procedure without having faced the emergency. Whether they can perform those steps under real conditions remains another question.

Testimony is not automatically accurate. Learners may consider a speaker's access, past reliability, explanation, motives and consistency with other evidence.

These cues are imperfect. Confidence can be mistaken for knowledge. Familiarity can be mistaken for expertise. A clear explanation can still be wrong.

Language expands what can be learned socially, but it also makes credibility assessment part of learning.

Feedback changes what becomes noticeable next

Feedback can draw attention to something the learner had not previously considered.

A colleague may question a calculation, a teacher may identify a structural gap or a coach may redirect attention within a movement.

Such responses may alter later attention, strategy or expectation. Yet feedback can be vague, contradictory or based on preference rather than the task. It may address an action or become a judgment about the person.

Learners do not simply absorb it. They may accept it, misunderstand it, resist it or compare it with other evidence.

Feedback is socially supplied material for possible adjustment, not a direct installation of the correct response.

We do not learn from every person equally

When several people offer guidance, learners must decide whom to attend to and how much weight each source deserves.

Perceived competence can matter when it appears relevant to the task. Reliability may matter for testimony, while in some contexts similarity can make another person's outcome seem more applicable.

Status and prestige can attract attention, particularly when direct evidence of expertise is unavailable. But these cues are not equivalent. A person can be competent without being a good teacher. Someone can sound confident while being wrong. Prestige gained in one domain may provide little information about competence in another, even though learners do not always respect that boundary.

Model selection can reduce the effort required to evaluate every claim independently. It can also direct attention toward people who are visible rather than accurate.

Belonging and norms affect what seems relevant

People may pay particular attention to those they identify with, people whose approval matters or members of a group they want to join. Belonging can increase attention to a behaviour, make its consequences more significant or affect whether acquired knowledge is later expressed.

As Belonging Regulates Behaviour explains, acceptance and affiliation can change the motivational significance of conduct.

Observed conduct can also communicate norms. Repeated performance, approval or criticism provides guidance about what appears ordinary and expected. Norms Make Behaviour Feel Natural examines how such expectations can make conduct feel increasingly normal.

But learning what a group expects is not the same as agreeing with it. A person may recognise a norm without endorsing it, know how to comply without doing so or perform the behaviour only when refusal would be costly.

Roles are partly learned through other people

Formal descriptions rarely contain everything a role requires.

A new manager may receive a list of duties, but observation, participation, instruction, institutional rules, stories and feedback reveal how authority is enacted in that setting. The person learns how decisions are communicated, which responsibilities receive attention and what conduct attracts trust or criticism.

In many roles, people encounter explicit directions alongside examples of what others do and how those actions are evaluated.

They do not have to accept everything presented to them. A learner may adopt one expectation, adapt another and reject a third.

These socially acquired expectations can later provide material for the process examined in Roles Become Part of the Self. Learning a role's conduct, however, is not the same as making the role part of identity.

Social learning can transmit error as well as useful information

Learning from others is efficient partly because the learner does not independently verify every claim, example or instruction. That creates vulnerability.

A demonstration may contain an ineffective step. A confident speaker may be wrong. A successful person may misunderstand their success. A group may preserve a harmful expectation because it is familiar.

Visibility is not evidence of effectiveness. Popularity is not accuracy. Status is not expertise, and approval is not proof that an action is beneficial.

People can also copy causally irrelevant details. If the learner cannot see why each step is performed, every part of a demonstration may appear necessary.

Socially acquired knowledge can be revised through contradictory experience, better explanations or contexts that expose an old strategy's limits.

Learning from other people is selective and fallible, but it is not irreversible.

Development and culture change how social learning works

The ways people use social information change across development.

Attention, language, prior knowledge and causal understanding affect what learners extract. Children can evaluate informants selectively, but their cues and interpretations vary with age and task.

Communities also differ in who teaches, how directly instruction is given, what children observe and what counts as a competent source.

These differences should not be reduced to a simple contrast between two kinds of culture. A difference between groups does not by itself reveal whether it arose through teaching practices, institutions, ecology, prior experience or another process. Nor should findings from one laboratory task become a universal description of learning.

Other species also learn socially, although similar behaviour does not establish identical mental processes. Human language, institutions and teaching extend the forms and reach of interpersonal learning, but observation itself is not uniquely human.

One learner can later become another person's source

What someone acquires through another person may not stop with them.

They may demonstrate, explain, modify or combine it with other knowledge. A learner can become someone else's source.

This possibility provides the individual-level foundation for how behaviour spreads through groups. How socially learned information persists and accumulates belongs to the Library's later account of how culture stores and transmits solutions.

Those wider patterns begin with a smaller event: one person making guidance, an example or a report available to another.

We learn possibilities, not commands

The learner watching an unfamiliar movement may leave with several kinds of knowledge. They may understand where to look, what the action is trying to achieve, which mistake to avoid and what question to ask before trying.

But the demonstration does not command a single response.

Other people allow us to learn from actions and outcomes we did not personally perform or undergo. This can make learning faster, broader and sometimes safer. It does not make transmission automatic or accurate.

What another person makes available must still be noticed, interpreted and remembered. Whether it becomes action depends on what the learner can do, wants to do and has the opportunity to attempt. Later experience can confirm what was learned—or reveal that it needs to change.
