Salience describes how some information becomes especially prominent relative to what competes with it.
A sudden sound in a quiet room can become immediately prominent.
A small street sign can suddenly matter when you are searching for a particular destination.
Food cues can stand out more when you are hungry than after you have eaten.
These examples differ because the route to prominence differs.
Sometimes something stands out because of its physical properties. Sometimes because it matches a current goal. Sometimes because experience has changed what it means to you. Sometimes because your present bodily state changes what is relevant.
That is the problem salience helps describe.
What Salience Means
Salience describes how some information becomes especially prominent relative to what competes with it.
That prominence is not fixed.
A red object may stand out among green objects and disappear into the background among many other red objects. A quiet sound may become striking in silence and barely noticeable in a noisy environment.
The same principle extends beyond perceptual contrast.
A sign can become prominent because it matches what you are looking for. A familiar cue can gain prominence because of what you have learned about it. A bodily sensation can move from the background to the foreground when its significance changes.
So salience is not best understood as a quantity stored inside an object.
It emerges from the relation among the information itself, what competes with it, the current context and the organism encountering it.
The same stimulus can become more or less salient without physically changing.
Why What Stands Out Can Change
There is more than one route to salience.
One is perceptual contrast. Something can stand out because it differs from its surroundings in colour, movement, intensity, orientation or another feature.
But physical conspicuity is only one route.
Current goals can also change what becomes prominent. A visually ordinary sign may suddenly stand out because it contains exactly the information you are searching for.
Learning matters too. A cue that once meant very little can gain prominence after experience has made it consequential.
What has mattered before can alter what stands out now.
That does not mean repetition alone creates salience. Repeated irrelevant information can become easier to ignore. What matters is the relationship between what has been learned and the current situation.
Bodily state can change that relationship again.
Food-related information may become more prominent when you are hungry than when you are full. A normally background bodily sensation can move into the foreground when its interpreted significance changes.
Novelty, surprise and threat can also contribute. Something unfamiliar can gain priority because it differs from what has recently been encountered. Something unexpected can trigger additional processing or reorientation. A possible threat can become highly prominent because of its potential consequences.
But none of those is salience itself.
Something familiar can remain highly salient. Something expected can remain highly salient. Something highly salient does not have to be threatening.
The broader principle is simple:
what stands out depends on the relation among the signal, the context, previous learning, current goals and the current state of the organism.
Salience Is Not Attention
Salience and attention are closely related, but they are not the same thing.
As explained in Attention Selects Information, information competes for selective processing.
Salience describes the unequal prominence within that competition. It does not by itself specify the mechanism that produced that prominence.
A perceptually striking object may receive increased processing priority. A learned cue may compete strongly for attention. A goal-relevant signal may become easier to select.
But increased prominence does not guarantee selection.
A conspicuous distractor can be successfully ignored. Attention can be deliberately directed toward subtle information that would otherwise attract little notice. Current goals can also change which information becomes prominent in the first place.
This gives us a crucial distinction:
prominence is not the same as selection.
Something can stand out strongly enough to compete for attention without becoming the thing you ultimately attend to.
Salience can bias attention, while current attentional goals can change which information becomes prominent.
Interaction is not identity.
What Matters to Us Can Change What Stands Out
Salience also interacts with valuation.
As explained in Valuation, outcomes, states and possibilities can acquire different subjective significance depending on context and the organism's current condition.
That significance can contribute to prominence.
But value and salience are not the same dimension.
A threatening stimulus can be highly salient while being strongly negatively valued.
And something can be deeply valued without dominating the current moment. A long-term health goal may matter enormously while a trivial notification temporarily receives more immediate processing priority.
So:
high salience does not imply high positive value, and high value does not guarantee high current salience.
Previous consequences can also change what later stands out. A cue associated with reward, threat or another important outcome may gain priority through learning.
But reward is not salience. Neither are pleasure or motivation.
These processes can contribute to prominence without being identical to it.
In reward research, incentive salience is a specialised term referring to motivational “wanting” attached to reward-related cues. It is not the definition of salience as a whole.
One Word Does Not Mean One Mechanism
Scientists use the word salience in several research traditions.
Perceptual salience often concerns how features stand out relative to their surroundings.
Incentive salience refers to a specialised motivational process.
Neuroscience also uses the label salience network for a large-scale network associated with several forms of behaviourally relevant processing.
These usages overlap around a broad concern with prominence or relevance.
But they do not demonstrate that one universal salience mechanism has been discovered.
The same word can describe related phenomena at different explanatory levels.
And the name salience network should not be taken to mean that every form of psychological salience is generated by one neural system.
The governing principle is:
shared terminology does not guarantee shared mechanism.
What Stands Out Is Not Necessarily What Matters Most
Salience matters because prominence changes the competitive landscape of cognition.
When information becomes more salient, it becomes more likely to influence what is processed next.
It may become:
more likely to receive attention;
more likely to shape interpretation;
more likely to enter evaluation;
more likely to influence action.
But none of those outcomes is guaranteed.
A salient signal can be noticed and rejected.
A tempting cue can attract attention without producing action.
A dramatic event can dominate the moment without being the most consequential thing happening.
This is why salience should not be confused with objective importance.
What stands out is not necessarily what matters most.
Prominence does not establish truth either. Information can become salient because it is vivid, familiar, emotionally charged or personally relevant without thereby becoming more accurate.
Salience tells us something about what has gained priority in the current moment.
It does not tell us what deserves priority by every other standard.
