Arousal, Valence and Emotion Are Not the Same

Arousal tells us about activation. Valence tells us about affective quality. Neither one—and not even the two together—fully identifies an emotion. This Concept explains why these constructs must remain distinct and why physiology, experience, emotion labels and causal explanations answer different questions.

The question

Which aspect of an affective episode are we describing—and what information do we still need before we can explain it?

Definition

Arousal, valence and emotion describe related but non-equivalent aspects of affective life. Arousal concerns activation and responsiveness, while valence concerns positive–negative or pleasant–unpleasant affective quality. Emotion refers to a richer episode involving interacting bodily, experiential, cognitive, neural, behavioural and contextual processes. Similar activation can accompany different emotions, and similar valence can occur across emotionally distinct states. Even arousal and valence together do not uniquely identify an emotion or explain the processes that generated it.

Your body feels strongly activated.

Your heart is beating faster.

The experience feels unpleasant.

What emotion is this?

There is not enough information to know.

Those observations tell us something about bodily activation and affective quality. They do not tell us, by themselves, which emotion is occurring.

It could be fear.

It could be anger.

It could be another unpleasant, highly activated state.

And some overlapping activation-related features could also occur during a pleasant state such as excitement.

That is the central distinction of this Concept.

Arousal, valence and emotion are related.

They are not the same thing.

Arousal tells us something about activation and responsiveness.

Valence tells us something about affective quality—whether an experience is broadly pleasant or unpleasant, positive or negative in the relevant sense.

Emotion refers to a richer episode involving changing relations among bodily, experiential, cognitive, neural, behavioural and contextual processes.

So: arousal ≠ valence; arousal ≠ emotion; valence ≠ emotion.

And even when arousal and valence are considered together: arousal + valence ≠ complete emotion.

These distinctions matter because activation does not identify emotional meaning, and affective quality does not identify emotional identity.

Arousal, Valence and Emotion Answer Different Questions

Suppose someone says: I feel highly activated.

That tells us something about experienced activation.

A physiological measure may tell us something else about bodily state.

Neither tells us, by itself, whether the person is afraid; angry; excited; intensely focused; or anticipating something important.

Arousal answers a relatively narrow question: how activated or responsive is the organism?

Now suppose the person says: This feels unpleasant.

That tells us something different.

It describes valence—the pleasant or unpleasant affective quality associated with the experience.

But unpleasantness still does not tell us whether the emotional episode is fear, anger, sadness, disgust or something else.

Valence answers another question: how pleasant or unpleasant is the experience?

Emotion is broader.

As established in What Must a Theory of Emotion Explain?, emotional episodes involve changing relations among bodily, neural, experiential, cognitive, behavioural and contextual processes.

An emotion therefore cannot automatically be reduced to one dimension of activation or one dimension of affective quality.

Arousal, valence and emotion describe related aspects of affective life, but they answer different questions.

Distinguishing them does not mean separating the organism.

As established in Mind, Brain and Body Form One System, bodily, neural, cognitive and experiential processes occur within the same interacting organism.

Distinguishing the constructs does not mean separating the person.

Similar Activation Can Mean Different Things

Activation feels psychologically significant.

A racing heart, bodily tension or a strong sense of activation can make it tempting to infer what is happening emotionally.

But activation does not identify emotional meaning.

Fear can involve strong activation.

Anger can involve strong activation.

Excitement can involve strong activation.

Intense anticipation can involve strong activation.

These states are not physiologically identical.

The important point is narrower: different emotional states can share some activation-related features.

Through Interoception, information about internal bodily conditions can become available to the nervous system and contribute to experience.

But sensing bodily activation does not automatically reveal what that activation means.

A rapidly beating heart can contribute to an emotional episode without uniquely identifying fear, anger or excitement.

This is also where How Bodily Signals Become Experience becomes useful.

Physiological change and conscious experience are related, but they are not transparent copies of one another.

So: similar physiological activation does not guarantee similar conscious experience.

And: experienced activation does not provide a complete readout of physiology.

This is why the common equations fail: higher activation ≠ fear; higher activation ≠ anxiety; higher activation ≠ stress; higher activation ≠ threat.

The reverse fails too.

Lower activation can occur during quiet pleasant states.

But it can also occur during fatigue, sadness, disengagement or sleepiness.

So: lower activation ≠ calm. And: lower activation ≠ safety.

Arousal is informative.

It is not an emotion label.

Similar Valence Can Belong to Different Emotions

The same problem appears with valence.

Suppose an experience feels unpleasant.

That narrows the description.

But it still leaves many possibilities.

Fear can be unpleasant.

Anger can be unpleasant.

Sadness can be unpleasant.

Disgust can be unpleasant.

Yet these emotional states can differ substantially in activation; bodily experience; appraisal; interpretation; motivational direction; action tendency; and context.

So: affective quality does not identify emotional identity.

The same is true for pleasant states.

Excitement, relief, amusement and contentment can all be broadly pleasant while differing considerably in activation, meaning and behaviour.

Therefore: positive valence ≠ happiness. And: negative valence ≠ one particular negative emotion.

Valence is useful because it preserves one important feature of the state: whether the experience is broadly pleasant or unpleasant.

But in doing so, it compresses other information.

Calling fear and sadness both negatively valenced tells us something real.

It also discards many of the differences between them.

A dimension can preserve one important difference while discarding others.

Valence also needs to remain distinct from other constructs that often share the language of positive and negative.

As established in Reinforcement, Reward and Pleasure: valence ≠ reward ≠ reinforcement ≠ pleasure.

A pleasant affective quality is not, by itself, a complete description of reward-related processing.

That distinction is enough here. D5.5 develops the rest.

Arousal and Valence Together Still Do Not Equal Emotion

Because arousal and valence each preserve useful information, it is tempting to combine them and assume the result identifies the emotion.

For example: higher activation + unpleasant valence = fear.

But that does not work as a definition.

Anger can also involve strong activation and unpleasant affective quality.

Other states can occupy similar broad regions of an arousal–valence representation.

And even states matched broadly on valence and arousal can still differ along other psychologically important dimensions.

So: knowing a state's activation and affective quality narrows the description without uniquely identifying the emotion.

Arousal–valence maps can still be extremely useful.

They can reveal that two states differ in activation while sharing similar affective quality.

They can reveal that two states share similar activation while differing in pleasantness.

The problem begins only when the representation is asked to carry more information than it contains.

A low-dimensional representation necessarily compresses.

Arousal preserves information about activation.

Valence preserves information about affective quality.

But emotional episodes can also differ in appraisal; object or cause; meaning; motivational direction; bodily configuration; temporal course; behaviour; and context.

As established in Families of Emotion Theory, different theoretical traditions disagree about which of these features deserve the greatest explanatory weight.

And as explored in Where Emotion Science Agrees and Disagrees, agreement that arousal and valence organize affective data does not settle what emotion fundamentally is.

The correct conclusion is therefore not: dimensional models are wrong.

It is: dimensions answer some questions extremely well without answering every question about emotion.

Physiology, Experience, Emotion Labels and Explanations Answer Different Questions

Confusion often begins when information from different levels is treated as interchangeable.

Consider four kinds of question.

What is happening physiologically?

A researcher might measure heart rate; skin conductance; pupil response; respiration; or neural activity.

These measures can contain information relevant to emotional state.

But informative does not mean uniquely identifying.

A physiological pattern may help distinguish states in a particular experiment without becoming a universal emotion meter.

What is the person experiencing?

The person might report I feel highly activated, or this feels unpleasant.

These reports tell us something about experience.

They are scientifically meaningful.

But they are not complete measurements of physiology.

How is the broader episode described?

The person or researcher may use a label such as fear; anger; sadness; or excitement.

That description preserves information that a simple arousal or valence score does not.

But the label still does not tell us every bodily, experiential, cognitive or behavioural detail of the episode.

Even within a category such as fear, episodes can vary.

So: emotion category ≠ invariant physiological fingerprint.

What processes produced the episode?

That is another question again.

Explaining the episode may require information about the situation, interpretation, learning, expectations, bodily conditions and relevant neural or cognitive processes.

Knowing the physiology, experienced dimensions or emotion label does not automatically provide that explanation.

These four kinds of information are related.

They are not interchangeable.

And they are not a ladder from a less "real" description to a more "real" one.

They answer different questions about the same interacting organism.

Physiological activity tells us one kind of thing.

Experienced arousal and valence tell us another.

Emotion descriptions preserve other aspects of the episode.

Causal explanation asks how the episode came to be.

No one level automatically replaces the others.

This is also why finding a neural pattern associated with fear, unpleasantness or arousal does not mean that pattern is the construct.

Neural evidence can be informative without establishing one region, one pattern or one neurotransmitter as the identity of arousal; valence; or emotion.

The important distinction is: neural correlation ≠ construct identity ≠ complete causal explanation.

Dimensions and Categories Compress Different Information

Dimensions and emotion categories are sometimes presented as competing ways of describing emotional life.

They need not be.

Dimensions such as arousal and valence preserve certain similarities across states.

Fear and anger may both involve relatively strong activation.

Fear and sadness may both be broadly unpleasant.

Those similarities matter.

Emotion categories preserve different information.

Calling a state fear distinguishes it from anger in ways that higher activation and negative valence may not.

But categories compress too.

Not every instance of fear has the same physiology; the same intensity; the same appraisal; the same behaviour; or the same temporal course.

So: arousal and valence compress emotional information one way; emotion categories compress it another.

Neither representation is automatically the whole phenomenon.

The useful question is what information the representation preserves.

If the question is how activated or responsive is the state?, arousal is useful.

If the question is how pleasant or unpleasant is the experience?, valence is useful.

If the question is what kind of emotional episode is occurring?, a category or richer description may preserve distinctions the dimensions omit.

Even then, the category does not exhaust the episode.

Affective states can also change over time.

Activation can rise or fall during an episode.

Valence can shift.

Context can change the meaning of bodily and experiential information.

An emotional episode therefore need not occupy one fixed arousal–valence coordinate from beginning to end.

This does not make dimensions useless.

It shows why no single representation should be mistaken for the phenomenon itself.

Description Is Not Explanation

Imagine that we know three things about a person: they are strongly activated; the experience feels unpleasant; and they describe the state as fear.

We now know much more than we did at the beginning.

But important questions remain.

Why did the episode arise?

What did the person perceive or interpret?

What prior learning or expectations mattered?

What processes produced the bodily and experiential changes?

What will happen next?

The descriptions strong activation, unpleasant valence and fear are all informative.

None automatically supplies the causal explanation.

Describing affective structure is not the same as explaining the processes that generated it.

One final distinction is especially important for the Library architecture: valence ≠ valuation.

Here, valence refers to affective quality.

Valuation is developed separately in D7.4.

The two must not be treated as synonyms.

This Concept therefore establishes boundaries rather than a single theory: arousal ≠ valence; arousal ≠ emotion; valence ≠ emotion; arousal + valence ≠ complete emotion; physiological activity ≠ experienced state; experienced state ≠ emotion identity; emotion label ≠ causal mechanism; and valence ≠ valuation.

Each construct preserves something useful.

Arousal tells us about activation and responsiveness.

Valence tells us about affective quality.

Emotion preserves richer information about the episode.

But none should be asked to explain more than it contains.

The most useful question is therefore not: which description is the "real" one?

It is: which aspect of the episode are we describing—and what information do we still need before we can explain what is happening?

That distinction is what makes arousal, valence and emotion scientifically useful without making them interchangeable.
